This is to let you know that your wonderful story is still being read and appreciated. The emotional buildup is skillfully handled all the way to the sad but satisfying end. Many thanks.

This is angst at its best. I disagree with some other reviewers: Sometimes, life doesn't have a happy ending. The love of Napoleon's life is dead and buried and clueless about how much he was loved. That is the upshot of it and is a lesson to be learned by all who read this; do not let certain things go unsaid or you will regret it.
Thanks for sharing.

Oh dear. So sad. Poor Napoleon. I agree with an above commenter. It needs a happy ending sequel.

I think I need a sequel. One where Napoleon finds Illya alive. I'm a sucker for a happy ever after story.
I have read this several times. So very good! But I have to add my happy ever after or else I can't get to sleep.

I, like Meris, have read this story a few times. So touching. The saddest words...it might have been.

What an incredible tale this was. I really felt the impact at the end. This is a haunting story that I will reread again, I'm sure.

My comment for this ended up on the wrong story (can't see how, since I used the link at the bottom of the story, but there you go!) so I'll repost it here:
Utterly fabulous and utterly heartbreaking. I have tears in my eyes. Thank you!

Oh! This is so sad. You are truly a master of angst. I can only hope that Illya isn't really dead. The sex scene was lovely.

1) I disagree with your qualification of PWP. This is a complete story in itself. It tells it well and to the point. There is plot. Don't run it down because it's short.
2) After cheering because there are new stories on TCGM, I found myself returning to this one again and again because I identified so strongly with the primary emotion behind it. Napoleon is heartsore, with no remedy except substitution and regret, and you have rendered him so perfectly in character with that, that I had to tell you how the story moved me, returning me to a place I thought I had left behind.
Thank you for writing this with skill and concise imagery. It resonates strongly in all the right places.
